Today teachers are also on screen like heroes and the biggest challenge before them is how to keep the children connected with it. This is to say of Amol Gupte, a special personality of the cinema world, filmmaker, actor and screenwriter of the film ‘Taare Zameen Par’. On the other hand, former BHU professor and writer Kashinath Singh, whom Gulzar himself reads, says that between the teacher and the student, there are no pages of the book, there is life in the pages. So on Teacher’s Day, read the special articles of these two celebrities…

The world of theater and cinema teaches us an important lesson in life. Be it the world of the screen or the stage of the class. In both the places, the challenge is for the characters to maintain the interest of the audience. We have teachers today in a similar role. Today teachers are also on screen like heroes, but their biggest dilemma is probably how to keep children connected with education.

Going back to my childhood… I remember, the same teacher who used to teach like theatre, used to leave the biggest impact on the children. Our gentleman sir… used to teach maths. Lived in Gurbat… but his pocket was never empty for us children. Chocolates worth 35 paise were always in the pocket.

When good marks came, that was the reward. Then guess the price of 35 paise from this that then five paise was the bus fare. Ramshankar Nikum was an art teacher. Namvar Singh used to teach me Hindi. He also used to write songs in films. It was because of Naamvar sir that my interest in literature arose.

In the Corona era, the responsibility of teachers has doubled, as they have now become virtual characters. Despite being virtual, they are proving themselves. Keeping kids engaged… is no less than a success. In fact they deserve the award. In Britain, teachers get paid more than doctors. Today is a difficult situation, yet the teachers are standing as sympathizers of the children. They are feeling the pain of the children. Such a spirit of education can only be in Indians.

Our Shantiniketan has always been a perfect example of Guru-Shishya tradition. If Guru is like Rabindranath Tagore… and his energy reaches the children fearlessly, then surely the same sun will start rising in those children too. Such should be the nature of education. Good education is like planting a seed. Grass grows everywhere, but a mango tree grows where its seed is sown. He has to give sunlight. One has to keep a watch… then it becomes a tree. If we want our future crop to be valuable like this, then today we have to work hard for it. Remember… even the Taj Mahal was not built in one night.

Between the teacher and the student, it is not just the pages of the book, there is life in these pages, the students learn the struggle of life from them.

It has been 25 years since I retired from teaching life. Still, I am in front of you as a teacher. Our Guru has been Hazari Prasad Dwivedi. He has written in the autobiography of Banabhatta that “Wherever you get justice, pull it by force… Do not be afraid of anyone, not even from the world, not even the Vedas, not even the Guru, not even the mantra.” He taught to be fearless and respected dissent.

The respect of this dissent made one of his students the pinnacle of criticism, Namvar Singh. We also learned from Pandit ji that dissent is not a protest, it leads to conflict of ideas. He never considered students as students, always considered friends. As a result of this, some of our students are today eminent poets and storytellers. Of which I can mention two. Poet Dinesh Kushwaha and storyteller Devendra. We have grown out of disagreements. Even today there are many stories of Devendra which make me jealous.

Luckily I was a professor in a university which was autonomous. Here the police or cabinet minister also had to take permission before coming to the university campus. We had full freedom to make our own curriculum and we kept human values in mind in designing the curriculum.

Today you will have to teach on the instructions of the University Grants Commission. The curriculum will also decide the same, if in place of Premchand, some other writer is given to teach, then there is no question of nostalgia. You have to teach. It should be kept in mind that between the teacher and the student there are no pages of a book, life is in the pages. We teach students to live life through books, teach to struggle. So the whole synergy has got mixed up in the current system.

Don’t call the current system of educational institutions dull, wretched. Let me give an example that in my student life, when Dharamsheel Chaturvedi, son of well-known scholar Sitaram Chaturvedi, used to come to Arts College, the whole campus of Arts College resonated with his laughter. If you laugh like that today, then the proctorial board or the police will be called. The euphoria among universities is over.
