Tamil Nadu to ensure basic literacy to all children above 8 years by 2025, releases detailed plan

The Tamil Nadu School Education Department has drawn up a detailed plan to ensure that all children above the age of eight in the state have basic literacy and numerical ability by 2025.

The state government’s Directorate of Elementary Education has sent detailed and detailed guidelines to teachers to achieve the goal of the state government’s ‘Enam Ezhuthum’ scheme. The ‘Enam Ezhuthum’ scheme focuses on improving basic literacy and numerical ability of school children above eight years of age.

The Department of Elementary Education under School Education has directed all District Education Officers to ensure that the ‘Enum Ezhuthum’ scheme reaches all primary teachers. It is to be noted that the scheme is a dream project of Chief Minister MK Stalin to take the state of Tamil Nadu to achieve basic literacy and numerical ability for all children above the age of eight years.

The school education department’s circular states that morning prayers are mandatory which includes Tamil Thai Vazhthu, Thirukural teachings with their meanings and wishes to students on their birthdays.

Students should be encouraged to read news and general knowledge material in English on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students of classes 1-3 should be trained in morning hours in phonetic sounds, addition and multiplication tables, puzzles, pronunciation and storytelling. Arts and crafts should be taught in the afternoon. To recognize their talent in sports, students should compulsorily play sports.

The circular also states that students of classes 4-5 should be encouraged to engage in solo acts, plays, library sessions and read children’s magazines, newspapers and general knowledge books. Students should also be trained in music, art and dance.

The School Education Department will also provide movies to be screened to the students. The circular emphasizes that children should be involved in literary club activities to improve their leadership skills.

A senior official of the Tamil Nadu School Education Department told IANS that the Chief Minister’s Office wants the project to be implemented properly and results are out by 2025 and hence district education officers are seriously involved in the implementation of the project.
