Tamil Nadu: Mudumalai Tiger Reserve tiger numbers reach saturation point. Coimbatore News – Times of India

Udhagamandalam: Home to 103 tigers, Mudumalai Tiger Reserve According to CH Padma, Deputy Director, MTR-Core Zone, it has reached its saturation when it comes to tiger population.
“The tiger population in the MTR has definitely increased since the last survey in 2018. We can say that MTR is saturated when it comes to tiger population. The increase in tiger numbers will be accommodated in spillover areas like Mukurthi National Park and adjacent Nilgiri and Gudalur forest divisions,” Padma said.
MTR is home to the largest density of tigers among the five sanctuaries in the state.
Tigers defend their territory. It has been suggested that the minimum area size for female tiger is around 10-15 sq km while for male tiger it is 50-60 sq km.
While the total area of MTR is 688.59 sq km, the core area is 321 sq km.
Apart from the 103 tigers in the MTR (as per NTCA 2018-19 report), the Nilgiri division of the forest has about 20 tigers and the Gudalur division is home to about five tigers. According to forest officials, there are at least 13 tigers in Mukurti National Park.
