T10: Bowlers Have to Eye Wickets Iver Saving Runs, says Bangla Tigers’ Mentor S Sreesanth

One of the most followed cricketers in modern times has been India’s S Sreesanth, both for his impeccable seam bowling abilities and his businesslike ways, and also for untoward incidents related to match-fixing and the dark side of the game.

Part of the Indian team that won the first T20 World Cup in 2007 and the ODI World Cup at home in 2011, Sreesanth’s illustrious career now sees him in the role of a mentor with the Shakib Al Hasan-led Bangla Tigers in the sixth edition of the Abu Dhabi T10.

Talking about T10 from a bowler’s point of view, Sreesanth said, “It is the fastest format and it is a lot of fun. And when you bowl to dangerous batsmen, you have to back yourself. As a bowler, you have to believe that you can get wickets and don’t think too much about runs. I’m really enjoying it so far.”

However, Sreesanth’s Bangla Tigers did not start their season well, losing three out of the first four matches.

“As a bowling unit we have to be more consistent. And we have 3 more games and we have to win the games well so that NRR gets a boost as well. We have a short break and we will work on things. In a smaller tournament, it’s all about stringing together. It’s just a matter of one more win, and we’ve got a fantastic side and if players like Evin Lewis and Colin Munro step up, there’s nothing better.”

Sreesanth, who has been at the center of several serious white-ball contests, believes T10 can also help players stake their claim for national teams and franchises in other formats of the game.

“Whichever format you play it can be very helpful. The best thing about T10 is that it is high paced and this platform allows you to showcase your skills in front of franchise owners and established coaches in the game. Every match is different and if I were a current player, I would try to play to the best of every opportunity.”

Whether you are a newbie or an established cricketer, it is very important to set the benchmark so that it helps to attract attention for the bigger leagues.”

Speaking about being in the same camp with former arch-rival, Pakistan’s Mohammad Amir, the Bangla Tigers mentor said the two hit it off well.

“Yeah, it’s been fun and I’m really grateful to have worked with so many top players in the world during the Abu Dhabi T10. At the end of the day, our focus is on supporting ourselves and doing well for the team As a bowler it doesn’t matter who the batsman is but we have to back ourselves to get wickets.”
