Students, parents miffed over I PU exam timings | Mangaluru News – Times of India

Mangaluru: The I PU examination timings has left both students and parents worried, especially from rural areas, According to the department of pre-university education (DPUE) circular, the terminal examinations of I PU students will start at 2.30pm and end at 5.45pm. The examinations will be held from March 28 to April 13. The results will be announced on April 30.
“We can come to write the examination to the centres, however, it will be difficult to return home, as the examination ends at 6pm. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, all bus services have become skeletal. There are only a few buses available to return home. It is our request to the DPUE, to change the timings to suit our convenience,” said a student from a rural area of Belthangady taluk, who is studying at a private college.
Parents too raised concerns on why such timings were fixed, when the department is aware of the situation. According to sources from the DPUE, the examination timings are fixed since the SSLC board examination too starts on the same day. “This will be a problem in composite college campuses, which have both SSLC and PU colleges. Since the resources are limited, they cannot hold exams together. Therefore, I PU examinations are being held in the afternoon,” stated a source. The PU examination can be held only after 2.30pm, as the SSLC examination process ends at 2pm, the source added.
However, lecturers and PU department officials in Dakshina Kannada said that the DPUE has given the responsibility to each district, to conduct examinations. “It should also give us the freedom to change examination timings, as the current timings are not feasible for a majority of the students as well as teachers,” said a senior PU department official.
A PU college principal suggested that SSLC examinations should be held on alternate days. “I PU examinations can be shifted to the morning, on the days when there is no SSLC examination. We should be given flexibility to hold examination with maximum students in attendance in the morning, and subjects with minimum students can be held in the afternoon.
CD Jayanna, Dakshina Kannada DDPU, said that he is aware about the inconvenience caused due to examination timings. “We will take up the issue with higher officials of the DPUE at the earliest,” he said.
