Stern Action Sought Against Residents Who Pollute Pond | Coimbatore News – Times of India

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Pond Conservation Organisation (Kovai Kulangal Padhukaappu Amaippu) has urged the district administration to take action against residents of T.Kottampatti in Pollachi for dumping garbage in a rainwater harvesting pond in the area.
In a petition to collector G S Sameeran, the organisation’s coordinator R Manikandan said the pond shrank after residents started dumping debris. “A portion of agricultural land near the pond was changed to residential plots in 1990. There are attempts to earmark the pond and its surroundings for laying roads. Now, we are getting reports that residents are dumping waste water into the pond,” Manikandan said.
Manikandan said a group of volunteers desilted the pond during a drive held last September. “The dumping started from December. The district administration should conduct a survey of the pond and rejuvenate it.”
In another petition to the collector, the organisation urged the state government to seize idols made of plaster of paris, which is banned by the central pollution control board to be used in idols. “Immersion of Ganesha idols made of plaster of paris were prevalent during the Vinayagar Chathurthi celebrations. These idols cause environmental pollution,” it said. tnn
