Fan-sellers were trading well in the southern city of Seville on Saturday, as Spain plunged into the hottest pre-summer heatwave for at least 20 years.

Carriage drivers haul down horses that take tourists around Seville’s historic sites such as the Real Alcázar Palace and Plaza de Espaa.

Temperatures reached 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) degrees Saturday in the Guadalquivir Valley in Seville and the nearby city of Cordoba, the national meteorological office AEMET said.

Forecasters said temperatures could rise to 42 degrees Celsius (108 Fahrenheit) degrees in the Guadiana Valley in Extremadura and other parts of southern Spain on Saturday.

On Sunday, heatwaves could intensify as temperatures in parts of southern Spain could rise to 43 °C (110 Fahrenheit) degrees Celsius.

A cloud of warm air from North Africa has raised temperatures, AEMET forecasters said, and a suffocating heat wave could last through much of Spain until June 15, six days before summer officially begins on June 21. Earlier
