South African cricketer still in coma after third surgery, was brutally attacked in England

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has come out in support of the family of 20-year-old bowler Mondali Khumalo, who was brutally beaten up in the United Kingdom in the early hours of Sunday morning, leaving him in a coma.

Khumalo is in a coma after a third surgery on Wednesday at Southmead Hospital after being attacked early Sunday morning (29 May) near the Dragon Rise pub in Bridgewater, but his condition is stable.

A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm but has been released under investigation.

Sources close to Mondali told local media that the surgery was done to remove a blood clot from his brain, which had caused high blood pressure.

The CSA, in collaboration with KZN Cricket Inland, has connected with the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture to facilitate passports for the Khumalo family to travel to Bridgewater with Mondly. After this intervention, passports were issued to the family on Wednesday. The visa process should end on Thursday (June 2).

Commenting on the progress made so far, CSA’s Chief Executive Officer, Foletsi Mosecki, said: “CSA is deeply saddened by the unfortunate attack on Mondali, a shining star in the CSA U19 setup. We share in the pain and suffering of the Khumalo family and as a result have dedicated our superiors to provide whatever support the Khumalo family may need.

“So far the collaboration with KZN Cricket Inland and various stakeholders has yielded positive results, which will hopefully lighten the challenges faced by the Khumalo family in this difficult time. In the meantime, we are encouraged that Mondly is now stable after emergency surgery. CSA called on the people of South Africa to pray for Mondali’s speedy recovery and thank those who came forward for their support.
