South African cricketer Mondali Khumalo out of coma attacked in England

20-year-old South African cricketer Mondali Khumalo, who was beaten up outside a pub in Somerset on June 29 (Sunday morning), is out of coma, said a report in Mirror.co.uk on Saturday.

Khumalo, who plays as a foreign professional for North Peterton Cricket Club in Somerset, was in a medically induced coma for six days and underwent three surgeries at Southmead Hospital.

Khumalo won the 2020 Under-19 . also represented South Africa in World cup. The report said that “Khumalo has been pulled out of a medically induced coma and is making great progress.”

The cricketer, who has been contracted back home to Kwa-Zulu Natal Inland, was attacked while he was celebrating North Peterton Cricket Club’s victory near the Dragon Rise pub in Bridgewater.

His skull was fractured and he had to undergo three surgeries, the last being to remove the blood clot.

Quoting Khumalo’s North Peterton teammate Lloyd Irish, The Cricketer said the player’s condition is stable.

“Mondali was doing well yesterday (Friday) and they pulled him out of his coma. He has shown great power. He’s asking his mother, watching some England vs New Zealand Tests and even wants to know when his next game is! We have seen good progress in the last 24 hours. It has been a rollercoaster of emotions; Although now we are headed in the right direction,” Irish said.

A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.
