Sonia Gandhi reaches out to the opposition for fielding a ‘common candidate’ for the presidential election

Congress President Sonia Gandhi has approached opposition leaders including DMK chief MK Stalin, NCP supremo Sharad Pawar, CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury on the issue of fielding a common candidate for the upcoming presidential election.

Sources said Gandhi has directed Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge to hold talks with opposition parties and build a consensus on who should be nominated as the candidate for the next President of India.

A member of the Congress Working Committee said, “Kharge has been tasked by the Congress President to find out the minds of non-NDA, non-UPA parties. He will hold a meeting with opposition party leaders and ascertain the probable names of the candidates.” .
