Soccer-Peru Strike Late to Beat Colombia in Crunch Qualifier

Barranquilla, Colombia: Edison Flores scored a late goal for Peru to give the Andean team a 1-0 win in Colombia on Friday and boost their chances of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Halftime substitute Flores scored after 85 minutes to give Peru their third straight win and 20 points and a point ahead of Uruguay in fourth place in the 10-team South America division.

The top four teams automatically qualify for Qatar and the fifth-placed team advances to the playoffs along with a team from the Asian Confederation.

Brazil and Argentina have already guaranteed their places and Ecuador is almost certain to join them in third place. Colombia is in sixth place with 17 points.

Colombia and Peru started the night on 17 points and although the home team took most of the race, they were hurt by their past failures in front of goal.

Friday’s game was their sixth consecutive qualifier without finding the back of the net.

Peru had only two shots on goal, while Colombia’s 20 and Peruvian goalkeeper Pedro Gallis also made some fine saves to keep their team in the game.

With three games remaining, Uruguay, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia and Paraguay all still have a chance to reach the final and only Venezuela, who play Bolivia later on Friday, are completely out.

Peru’s next game is in Ecuador on Tuesday, while Colombia is away from Argentina the same night.
