Snippets from Britain: Britain’s Omicron surge has ominous signs for India

Worrying prospect: The news about Omron is worrying for India. This would seem unlikely, given the scattered few cases reported in India and the widely held belief that this mutation is more contagious but less dangerous. But over the weekend Britain has seen its first cases of hospitalizations from Omicron. The move from a few scattered cases to a deadly sweep can be devastatingly fast. Already we know that this new mutation can be more severe than another type of flu, which many people were quick to call it, too early.

Vaccine crisis: For India, the signals coming from Britain are even more worrying. Preliminary studies seem to suggest that AstraZeneca is not very effective against Omicron. India is definitely going with AstraZeneca under the name Covishield. Covaxin is one such vaccine. Studies have found that taking a third dose of Pfizer is the best bet against Omicron. It is frightening to think that it will take Pfizer extremely expensive to stop the spread in India.

Small window: The Omicron wave is expected to peak in the UK in January. This would suggest that for anyone who wants to travel to India, or return to India from the UK, it would be a good idea to travel right away. The present-day seven-day quarantine at home is expected to follow what may seem like a picnic. With the way Omicron is spreading, it may be a matter of time before flights out of the UK stop completely.

odd number: Numbers coming out of the UK are currently the strangest and misleading for a very British reason. Due to this, the number of cases has come down from around 58,000 in the last three days to around 54,000 on Sunday to around 48,000. But no one is concluding that the numbers are actually going down. Reported numbers are declining as most people below the medical line do not work on weekends. The real test will be the covid call on Tuesday. If that comes down, it would be good news beyond belief at present.

To lead: Indian officials in London have been at the forefront of defeating Omicron without hiding. A group has been imposed on guests coming to an event to have swollen nose. The swab is dipped in a vial of magic water to give instant results. This means that visitors may be in the safest place possible, in a closed gathering of negatives.
