Fifties from Mohammad Rizwan and Haider Ali helped Pakistan beat West Indies by 63 runs in the first T20 International in Karachi on Monday. Rizwan smashed a 52-ball 78 that included 10 fours – his 12th half-century and 11th this year – while Haider scored a career-best 68 to take the hosts to 200-6 in his 20 overs. The visitors were never in search of a target as they were demolished by a superior Pakistan bowling attack and folded for 137 runs in 19 overs.

Fast bowler Mohammad Wasim posted a career-best 4-40 while spinner Shadab Khan took 3-17. Opener Shai Hope top-scored with 31 but the leg-spinner became one of Shadab’s two wickets in the same over, with Shamar Brooks being the other at five. Odion Smith (24), Rovman Powell (23) and Romario Shepherd (21) also contributed well but never threatened Pakistan. It was Pakistan’s 13th win in 19 Twenty20 Internationals against West Indies, taking a 1–0 lead in the three-match series.

Pakistan are once again anchored by Rizwan, who has a spectacular 2021 in Twenty20 International cricket, having already crossed 1,000 runs in the calendar year. Rizwan and Haider put on 105 runs for the third wicket after skipper Babar Azam fell without a run and Fakhar Zaman scored just 10 runs, giving the West Indies bowlers an early breakthrough. It was a rare failure for Azam – ranked number one in T20I cricket – as he sidelined a sharp turning ball from spinner Aqeel Hossain.

Zaman tops Shepherd before Rizwan and Haider save Pakistan. Haider hit four sixes and six fours in his 39-ball knock. Mohammad Nawaz finished the innings with a sharp 30 not out off 10 balls with the help of two sixes and three fours. West Indies were hit with three Covid-19 positive tests among their T20I players, bringing in Brooks and Devon Thomas from their ODI squad, making Brooks’ debut in the shortest format.

The rest of the matches are also on Tuesday and Thursday in Karachi.
