Slip of the tongue or strategy? Mukul Roy again said – doubts BJP will win the by-election

TMC MLA Mukul Roy once again courted controversy on Friday when he again said that the BJP will win if bypolls are held in his constituency Krishnanagar North. This is the second time within a week that Roy, who joined the Trinamool Congress a few days after winning the Assembly election seat on a BJP ticket, has said that the saffron party will win. However, he added that TMC will do well in the 2023 assembly elections in Tripura.

Meanwhile, the BJP has moved the court challenging the controversial appointment of Mukul Roy as the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

Asked if he would win again from Krishnanagar, Roy said, “Yes, he will win if he contests from the BJP. TMC, I don’t know.”

When asked how he was nominated in the PAC, he said, “I am PAC president from BJP. You ask questions I will answer as BJP.” He immediately said that he is in TMC.

The leader once again created panic with his statement, a video of which went viral. It wasn’t the first time he had said such a thing.

On 6 August, Mukul Roy visited his Krishnanagar constituency in Nadia district. When asked his reaction when the TMC reached the Election Commission for the bypolls, he suddenly said, “In the bypolls, I can say on behalf of the BJP that TMC will lose.” As he was saying his personal assistant was trying to fix it.

Realizing his mistakes, Roy corrected himself by saying that he actually meant TMC.

Roy’s son Subhranshu had defended his father’s earlier remarks, saying that he is forgetting things due to a chemical imbalance in his body and is suffering from depression after the death of his wife.

“My father has an excessive sodium potassium imbalance in his body, which is causing a lot of problems. He is forgetting everything. It started with the death of my mother. We are really worried about his health. To his words Should not be blown out of proportion.

Political analysts have wondered whether this is Roy’s strategy to tackle the BJP as he finds himself in trouble over the PAC nomination and the MLA’s post. The BJP has gone to court against his PAC presidency and his qualification as an MLA is being heard in the assembly, which is also opposed by the saffron party.

Whether it is Roy’s strategy to technically pretend that he is in the BJP, analysts have speculated that he clearly replied that he has been nominated for the president’s post from the BJP. There is a whisper in the corridors of Bengal power whether it is a slip of the tongue or Roy’s strategy.

Senior TMC leader Tapas Roy refused to comment on Roy’s mistake, while the BJP said people will judge such statements.

The senior politician had quit the Mamata Banerjee-led party to join the BJP in 2017 and returned to the TMC, almost a month after the results of the assembly elections were announced on May 2. However, officially he is still the BJP MLA from Krishnanagar North. Has been made the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the constituency and the state assembly.

Roy on Friday said he was ready to go to Tripura to work for the Trinamool Congress at the behest of the party. He said, ‘Whatever the party says, I will do it. BJP is not doing the right thing in Tripura. Our party will do well there in the next elections.”

BJP MLA and Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said Rai was greeted with much fanfare when he reached the TMC office to join after winning on a BJP ticket.

“Now if he makes such statements, it is for the people of the state to do justice. He was provided high security by the state government, he was made the PAC president. Now let TMC see.’

The TMC leadership is saying that Roy is a BJP MLA and hence his appointment as PAC president will not pose any problem on technical grounds.
