Sjoerd Marijne coached the Indian women’s hockey team to its best performance in the Olympic Games.

Indian women’s hockey team head coach Sord Marin on Friday revealed that the bronze medal match against Great Britain in the ongoing Olympics was her last assignment with the team. The 47-year-old coached the Indian women’s hockey team to its best performance at the Olympic Games, crediting her for a fourth-place finish here. The Indian women came close to winning their first Olympic medal, but lost 3-4 to Great Britain in the bronze play-off match. Hours after this feat, Marijne announced that this was her last assignment with the Indian team.
“I have no plans as this was my last match with Indian women. It is up to Janneka (shopman) now,” the Dutchman told Indian media in a virtual press conference.
It is learned that Marijne and the team’s analytical coach Janneka Schopman were both offered extensions by the Sports Authority of India (SAI), but the former declined the offer due to personal reasons.
Sources privy to the developments told PTI that Schopman is now expected to take over as a Marine on a full-time basis.
Dutch player Marin first took charge of the Indian women’s team in 2017 but was appointed coach of the men’s team later that year.
However, in 2018, she was re-designated as the women’s coach in a reshuffle of roles.
Marin has played for the Netherlands, and guided the Dutch under-21 women’s side to a World Cup title and the Dutch senior women’s side to the 2015 Hockey World League semi-final gold medal.
The friendly Dutchman has been unable to meet his family for the past 16 months due to COVID-19 related travel restrictions and this could be a major reason behind his decision to leave his job in India.
