Sital Shashthi is celebrated to celebrate the marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

Sitaal Shashthi is celebrated to celebrate the marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. According to the belief, the marriage took place in the Shukla Paksha of Jyestha month. Setal Shashthi is celebrated as a carnival where artists and other persons from different fields showcase their talent keeping the festival as the theme.

One of the most famous events in India is the Sambalpur Carnival celebrated in Sambalpur district, Odisha. Not only devotees visit Sambalpur during the event but tourists from all over the world also make this carnival grand.

Importance

Sitaal Shashthi is celebrated to commemorate the marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, as stated in the Shiva Purana. According to the story of their marriage, Parvati performed rigorous worship for Lord Shiva. Shiva finally decided to marry Parvati on the eve of Jyeshtha Shukla Paksha Shashthi. Sitaal Shashti also marks the beginning of the monsoon season. Farmers celebrate Sitala Shashthi as the bringer of monsoon.

Puja Vidhi

The Sital Shashthi festival is celebrated for five days. The first day is called “Patra Pendi”, where the chosen family adopts Parvati. Two days later, the idol of Goddess Parvati comes to the adoptive parents’ home. As a part of the ritual, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are married in a grand procession with devotees as witnesses and the divine couple then goes on ‘Nagar Parikrama’.

This yatra across the city is also known as “Sital Sashti Yatra”. Many eunuchs participate in the ceremony as Lord Shiva is also known as ‘Ardhanarishvara’.

The Sun will rise at 05:23 in the morning and set at 07:17 in the evening. Shashthi Tithi will start on 5th June at 04:53 am and will end on 6th June at 06:40 am.
