Narayan Singh was arrested from near Amritsar on Saturday. Govindpreet Singh and Bhagwant Singh, two more Nihangs of Fatehgarh Sahib “surrendered” to the Sonepat police on the same day in connection with the lynching.

An SIT led by IPS officer Mayank Gupta, who is the assistant superintendent of police of Kharkhoda, Sonepat, will probe the video of the incident which was circulating on social media. The second SIT under the leadership of Sonipat Deputy Superintendent of Police Virender Singh will conduct a comprehensive investigation into the matter.

The victim’s family had earlier questioned the attackers’ claim that he had committed sacrilege and demanded a high-level inquiry into the matter. The body of victim Lakhbir Singh was cremated on Saturday evening in his native village in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district amid tight security in the presence of his family members.

Sarabjit Singh was the first to be arrested on Friday for the brutal murder of Lakhbir Singh. He was produced in a court in Sonipat on Saturday from where he was remanded to seven-day police custody. Hours later, Narayan Singh was arrested by the Amritsar Rural Police from Amarkot village in Amritsar district, police had said. He was brought to Sonipat by Haryana Police in the early hours of Sunday.

Speaking to the media before his arrest in Amritsar, Narayan Singh had no remorse and said that Lakhbir Singh was “punished for insulting”. According to Sonepat police earlier, Sarabjit Singh had claimed that some more people were involved in the murder.

The case sparked outrage and calls for action to be taken to vacate protest sites on the borders of Delhi, where farmers have been camping since last November to press for the scrapping of the Centre’s three agricultural laws.

However, in a statement issued on Friday, the United Kisan Morcha distanced itself from the incident, saying it wanted to clarify that “both sides of the incident”, the Nihang group and the victim, have no connection with the Morcha. .

Farmers’ union leaders on Saturday asserted that the incident would have no bearing on the agitation and added that they would enhance security by installing CCTV cameras and increasing the number of volunteers at the protest sites.

Lakhbir Singh’s body was found on Friday tied to a barricade at the Singhu border, with his hand amputated and multiple wounds sustained by sharp-edged weapons. Hours after the crime, Sarabjit Singh, wearing the blue robes of the Nihang order, claimed that he had “punished” the victim for “desecrating” a Sikh holy book.
