Coimbatore: Thousands of people thronged the business centers of the city at the last minute diwali shopping on Wednesday.
While textile stores and fancy stores were overcrowded, those selling electronic equipment, mobile phones, furniture and jewellery, also saw good sales.
The section connecting Town Hall Road and Oppanakara Street was closed to traffic as a large number of shoppers thronged the shops since morning. Many temporary shops were set up on parts of commercial centres. Oppanakara Street was packed throughout the day. Mill Road, 100 Feet Road, Gandhipuram 5, 6 and 7 Roads, Oppanakara Street, Ramamurthy Road, Sarmedu Salai, NP Itteri Road, Illithottam Junction and Thudiyalur Junction were also crowded.
S Karthiga, a resident of Soripalayam, who visited Cross Cut Road with her two children, said her shopping plans were getting delayed. “My husband got his salary only on Tuesday. Otherwise, we would have completed the purchase sooner. I have not bought crackers yet and plan to buy them on the way home,” she told TOI.
There was a huge crowd in the firecracker shops. V Rajesh, Resident NanjundapuramHe said that he had bought a box of firecrackers a few days back. He returned to the shop on Wednesday evening to buy sparklers.
Snacks and sweets were also in great demand. People ate sweets made from jaggery and palm jaggery as they are healthier than regular refined sugar.
Crowds of people also gathered in the flower market. A large number of police personnel were deployed in the congested areas to augment the police force and keep anti-social elements away. The Municipal Corporation had organized temporary vaccination camps in crowded areas so that the unvaccinated people could be benefited. Repeated announcements were made through the public announcement system to urge people to use this facility. A municipal health official said the teams formed to check crowds in commercial areas played their part to ensure compliance with masks.
