Shoojit Sircar on Sardar Udham Not Being India’s Oscar entry: It is a personal decision of the jury

Vicky Kaushal starrer Sardar Udham was one of the contenders as the official entry from India at the Oscars, but didn’t make the cut in the end. Tamil drama Koozhangal, directed by filmmaker Vinothraj PS, was announced as India’s official entry for the 94th Academy Awards. The jury members talked about the length of the film and why Sardar Udham was not selected, citing the theme of rebellion against the British as one of the main reasons.

Talking about the film directed by Shoojit Sircar, Jury member Indradeep Dasgupta said that its production meets international standards and also praised the cinematography of the film. But he added that the film “is a bit lengthy and is based on the Jallianwala Bagh incident. It is an honest attempt to make a grand film on an unsung hero of the Indian freedom struggle. But in the process, it rekindles our hatred for the British. In this era of globalization, it is not proper to hold on to this hatred.”

Another jury member Sumit Basu also said, “I thought the length of the film was an issue. It has a delayed climax. It takes a lot of time for a viewer to feel the real pain of the martyrs of Jallianwala Bagh massacre.”

During a heated conversation with the media on Sardar Udham, director Shoojit Sircar said that he has no comment on the jury’s decision. “It’s a personal opinion, it’s very subjective, I don’t have any comment on that. I respect the jury and their decision. I know about the film that was ultimately chosen, and I’m glad it was made.” Chosen. I go by the jury’s decision,” Shoojit said.
