Kalavati Delkar, wife of seven-time MP from the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, has won the by-election by a margin of 51,000 votes. The by-elections were held here on October 30 following the death of Mohan Delkar under suspicious circumstances at a Mumbai hotel. In this, his wife Kalavati had entered the election fray on a Shiv Sena ticket. He defeated Mahesh Gavit of BJP. Congress’s Mahesh Dhodi has been at number three in this seat. With this victory of Kalavati, Shiv Sena has registered victory in the Lok Sabha elections outside Maharashtra for the first time.

Mohan Delkar was elected to the Lok Sabha 7 times from 1989 till now as a candidate of BJP, Congress, Bharatiya Navshakti Party and as an independent. In such a situation, it was a seat of prestige for his family and Shiv Sena. Here, BJP had fielded tribal youth face Mahesh Gavit. The responsibility of the entire election of Kalavati Delkar was handled by her son Abhinav Delkar. In such a situation, if Kalavati wins, the crown of victory will be tied on the head of her son.

Delkar’s body was found in a Mumbai hotel
Mohan Delkar’s body was found from Sea Green Hotel in Mumbai. Controversy arose after the death of Mohan Delkar. Initially, the cause of Delkar’s death was said to be suicide, but in the suicide note that was found, Praful Patel, the administrator of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, was accused of pressurizing him to commit suicide. Delkar’s wife Kalavati and son Abhinav had demanded strict action against those responsible. Later, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray formed an SIT and ordered an inquiry into the matter. This investigation is still pending.

Why did Delkar commit suicide in Mumbai?
After Delkar’s death, the then Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh had said that if the MP Delkar had committed suicide in his parliamentary constituency Dadra and Nagar Haveli, he would never have got justice, so he committed suicide in Mumbai. Deshmukh had said that Delkar had said in his suicide note that he was being tortured and was under pressure from Praful Patel, who is the administrator of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Deshmukh said Delkar’s suicide note mentions that he was receiving threats from Patel that his social life would end.

After Delkar’s death, the investigation of his case was handed over to the SIT by the Maharashtra government.

Son’s allegation – Administrators of Dadra and Nagar Haveli were harassing
The body of MP Delkar was found on February 22 in a hotel in Mumbai. The police also found a suicide note from the hotel room. After this, Delkar’s son had said that Patel, the administrator of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, had left no stone unturned to humiliate my father. The trick of blackmail and extortion was also used. Abhinav had said that his father was being harassed for the last 16-18 months before he died. Abhinav’s mother Kalaben had said that she has faith in Mumbai Police and Maharashtra Police that her family will get justice.

Praful Patel has also been the Minister of State for Home of Gujarat during the Chief Ministership of Narendra Modi. At present he is the administrator of the Union Territories of Dadra-Nagar Haveli and Diu-Daman.

The name of Praful Patel, the administrator of Dadra Nagar Haveli and Diu-Daman, was continuously coming up in the MP’s suicide case. Patel is a former BJP MLA. Apart from being an MLA in Gujarat, he has also been the Minister of State for Home of Gujarat during the Chief Ministership of Narendra Modi.

Delkar was a continuous MP since 1989.
Mohan Delkar reached Parliament for the first time in 1989 by contesting as an independent from Dadra and Nagar Haveli constituency for the 9th Lok Sabha. After this, he won the elections twice on Congress ticket in 1991 and 1996. He won the elections in 1998, 1999 and 2004 by contesting on a BJP ticket.

After some time he left the BJP and won as an independent in 1999 and as a candidate of Bharatiya Navshakti Party in 2004. On 4 February 2009, he rejoined the Congress and after 10 years i.e. in 2019, after resigning from the Congress, he again became a member of the Lok Sabha as an independent candidate. After this, Delkar joined JDU in October 2020.

Delkar got a place in the committee of the Ministry of Home Affairs
Delkar was appointed to the Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Home Affairs. A total of 28 MPs from Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were given place in this committee, headed by Home Minister Amit Shah. His name was second after Ram Vilas Paswan in the list of 15 senior MPs of the 17th Lok Sabha.
