Sensex trades higher by 153 points amid volatility, Nifty rises again at 17,000

New Delhi: Major stock indices – Sensex and Nifty – eased early losses in morning deals on Monday after gains in Reliance Industries, HCL Tech and TCS, while FMCG, power and select banking and pharma stocks saw selling pressure.

During intra-day trading on Monday, the Sensex touched its day’s low of 56,382 and the Nifty fell below the 17,000-mark at 16,782.
However, both the benchmark indices later recovered after their worst single-day spike on Friday following news of a new Covid variant, Omicron.

The BSE index, which was over 500 points at the day’s high, eventually ended with a marginal gain of 154 points at 57,261 and the NSE Nifty hit a low of 16,782 in early deals, and then bounced back higher. of 17,161. Nifty 50 finally closed 28 points higher at 17,054.
Mid- and small-cap stocks underperformed their larger peers as the Nifty Midcap 100 index fell 1.35 per cent and the Nifty Smallcap 100 index fell 2.6 per cent.

Among the 30 Sensex stocks, Kotak Bank was the top gainer of 2.92 per cent at Rs 2,020. HCL Technologies, Titan, TCS, Bajaj Finserv and Bajaj Finance were the other major gainers. Reliance Industries closed at Rs 2,440, up 1.1 per cent.

On the other hand, Sun Pharma, Axis Bank and NTPC fell around 2 per cent each. PowerGrid Corporation, Nestle India, Bajaj Auto, Dr Reddy’s, ITC and HDFC were other notable losers.
