‘Selective behavior harmful to human rights’: PM Modi protests during NHRC event

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the 28th NHRC Foundation Day program through video conferencing on Tuesday. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and NHRC Chairman Justice Arun Kumar Mishra were also present during the programme.

PM Modi addressed the event and said that the government along with NHRC has ensured to protect the rights of women and children and has brought policies to ensure that they lead their lives with complete freedom without any fear. The PM further said that the nation is moving ahead with the motto of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas’ which in a way also works on the basic principle of ensuring human rights for all. If the government starts a scheme and only a few benefits from it, it will raise the issue of rights, so the Center is going ahead with the goal of ensuring that everyone gets the benefits of all the schemes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that even after independence, our Constitution gave the world a new perspective on equality. Over the past decades, the world has been diverted several times but India has remained committed to its principles.

Taking a jibe at the opposition, PM Modi said that some people remember human rights violations only on certain specific incidents and remain silent on those incidents which do not benefit them. Such selective attitude is dangerous for the country and people should keep distance from those who walk on such paths.

PM Modi further said that human rights should not only be about rights but also about duties. Both should not be discussed separately but together. In addition to the awareness of his rights, each person must perform his duties

What are the duties of NHRC?

The commission was constituted on 12 October 1993 under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 for the promotion and protection of human rights.

The NHRC takes cognizance of human rights violations, conducts inquiries, and recommends compensation to victims from public authorities, besides taking other remedial and legal remedies against erring public servants.

The commission also studies treaties and international instruments on human rights and makes recommendations to the government for their effective implementation. It is responsible for spreading human rights awareness among the public to encourage the efforts of all the stakeholders in the field of human rights literacy not only at the national level but also at the international level.

NHRC, India plays an active role in coordinating with other National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) of the world to raise awareness from the perspective of human rights. It has also hosted delegations from UN bodies and other human rights bodies, as well as civil society members, lawyers and political and social activists from several countries.
