Section of TMC lawyers protest in Calcutta High Court against Kalyan Banerjee for running syndicate

The tussle within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) was in the open on Tuesday when over 150 lawyers of the Calcutta High Court took out a rally against TMC leader MP Kalyan Banerjee, who is also a senior lawyer.

Lawyers wrote to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court and the Chief Justice of India, criticizing Kalyan Banerjee’s conduct in court along with aides. The letter states that Kalyan Banerjee is furious and has formed a syndicate within the legal fraternity.

“They did not allow the legal cell of TMC to develop for their own benefit. He has formed a syndicate and has taken undue advantage of his power and position. We are protesting and we have written a letter to the chief minister,” said Calcutta High Court lawyer Achint Kumar Banerjee.

The letter also accused Kalyan Banerjee of giving undue preference to women officers over some qualified lawyers. Using his power, Kalyan Banerjee took over the special Chamba in the High Court building for his son, who holds the post of Junior Standing Counsel, it states.

The lawyers demanded that “stern action should be taken against Kalyan Banerjee”.

Political commentators said the letter was written by a section of lawyers close to the group that has been campaigning against Kalyan Banerjee on social media as well as within the party.

It all started when Kalyan Banerjee openly criticized party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee over his personal views regarding halting of activities due to COVID-19.

This rally caught the attention of BJP and Amit Malviya tweeted, ‘The dispute between Mamata Banerjee and her nephew has reached the Calcutta High Court. The lawyers’ lobby now linked to Abhishek Banerjee is now accusing Kalyan Banerjee of syndicate, nepotism and corruption, who may have targeted Abhishek at Mamata’s behest.

TMC insiders told CNN-News18 that a large section of the party is unhappy with Kalyan’s remarks and that the protest is an effect of him. The TMC general secretary, however, has said that he does not wish to comment on the matter.

One thing is clear that at this time knives are running against Kalyan from within his own party.
