Scooters: Electric made up 7% of scooter sales in November. Chennai News – Times of India

CHENNAI: Electric scooters are slowly becoming a common sight on Indian roads. In November, 6%-7% Scooter Sales are estimated to be electric. This boom has prompted large ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) two-wheeler players to look at this segment even as electrics are entering through no-frills dealerships in tier-II and -3 cities, priced at Rs. ICE Showroom.
Electric two-wheeler market (scooters and motorcycles) will account for 8%-10% of the 1.5-1.8 million units by 2025, according to Rohan Kanwar GuptaVP and Sector Head at rating agency ICRA.
“A high percentage of electric two-wheelers will be scooters – already in November 6-7% of scooter sales were electric,” he said. November, however, was not a one-off month. Greaves Cotton-owned e-scooter maker Ampere has a 4-week waiting list on its flagship model Magnus, “December is proving to be better than October due to strong demand for two wheelers,” said Nagesh Basavanahalli, Group CEO and MD, Greaves Cotton.
“We have seen accelerated growth of electric two-wheelers in 2021, with over 70% of sales in the last five months of the year. Sohinder Gill, Director-General, Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV), said, “Given the recent trends, we may see 5-6x growth in the next 12 months.
The EV (electric vehicle) pick-up comes even as the scooter itself has seen some growth this year. “Scooter sales grew by 8.9% in April-November this year. In November, the number of electricity sales stood at over 3 lakh units as against 21,400 units,” said Ravi Bhatia, President, Jato Dynamics. Bhatia said the scooter share of EVs is much higher than that of total two-wheelers, which is around 1.5%.
