The Bombay High Court on Friday said the central government should formulate a uniform policy for naming airports across the country and accord top priority to the new civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.

On Friday, a bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Dutta and Justice GS Kulkarni was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by senior advocate Filji Frederick, directing the Center to formulate a uniform policy for naming and renaming of airports. was demanded to be given.

During the hearing on Friday, the court said that it cannot ignore the protests that took place on June 24 in Navi Mumbai. During that time, about 25 thousand people broke the Kovid-19 protocol and demanded to name the newly built airport after the late farmer leader DB Patil. This included farmers and people associated with the fish business.

The protest came after the Maharashtra government and the state-run Town Planning Agency (CIDICO) announced the name of the airport after the late Bal Thackeray, the founder of Shiv Sena.

In 2016 a draft was made to change the name
The court said that a draft for renaming was prepared in 2016, in which it was proposed to name airports after cities and not after individuals. However, the current status of such a policy is not yet clear. The bench asked Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh, appearing for the central government, “We would like to know the present status of the draft of the name change?”

The court further said, “If any new policy is still at the draft stage, then complete it now. You have just newly appointed ministers. Let the new aviation ministry do this. This should be the first task of the new aviation minister.
