Speaking at a function, the judge further observed that in India, social media has always been used to “politicize purely legal and constitutional issues”. “In India Which cannot be defined as a fully mature or defined democracy, social media is often employed to politicize purely legal and constitutional issues,” he said.

On Friday, a vacation bench of Justices Surya Kant and Pardiwala came down heavily on Sharma for his remarks against the Prophet, saying his “loose tongue” has “set the whole country on fire” and that he is “the only one who is The “country” is responsible for that.

The top court also refused to entertain a plea seeking linking of FIRs lodged against him in various states for Sharma’s remarks. The bench said the remarks were made either for cheap publicity, political agenda or for some nefarious activities.

“He really has a loose tongue and has made all kinds of irresponsible statements on TV and has set the entire nation on fire. Still, she claims to be a lawyer of 10 years…she should have immediately apologized for her comments across the country,” the court said.

“Is there any danger to her or has she become a threat to security? The way she has instigated sentiments across the country, this woman alone is responsible for what is happening in the country,” the bench said, when Sharma’s counsel Maninder Singh said that she was facing threats to life.

Sharma’s comments during a TV debate triggered protests across the country and drew sharp reactions from several quarters and also from several Gulf countries. Later the BJP suspended him from the primary membership of the party.
