There are three Mahajan families associated with the temple – Gaonkar, Madwol and Gurav. According to the Gaonkar group, all three families have the right to perform rituals in the temple. However, they claim that members of the Gurav group are trying to control the temple and not allowing Gaonkars and Mudwolls to participate in major religious ceremonies.
Breaking the annual tradition of gathering at the temple at 3 pm for Dussehra on Friday, the members of the Gurav group came only at 1 pm and began the festivities. This turned into a dispute after a heated argument between the Gaurav and Gaonkar groups.
The Gavas unsuccessfully tried to pacify both the groups and finally decided to close the temple to avoid any untoward incident.
Police were also deployed in the temple premises.
Interestingly, just a day earlier, on Thursday, the Gaonkar and Madwol groups submitted a memorandum to the Gavas complaining that the Gurav group was not allowing them to perform major rituals at the temple.
The Mamlatdar had said that all community members have the right to perform the rituals and assured to look into the matter.
