Sarbananda Sonowal resigns from Assam Assembly after Rajya Sabha elections

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, a two-time MLA from Majuli seat, was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who has been elected to the Rajya Sabha, resigned from the Assam Assembly on Tuesday after the Election Commission announced the schedule for October 30 bypolls to five seats in the state. Sonowal was MLA for two consecutive terms. Majuli seat was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha on Monday. Assam Assembly’s OSD Amarendra Deka said his resignation from the assembly was accepted by Speaker Biswajit Daimary. With Sonowal’s resignation, the BJP’s strength in the 126-member Assam Assembly has come down to 59. The ruling allies AGP and UPPL have nine and five MLAs respectively. The opposition Congress has 27 MLAs, AIUDF 15, BPF three and CPI(M) one. There is an independent MLA in the house. Earlier during the day, the Election Commission announced the dates for the by-polls to five seats in Assam, namely Mariani, Thaura, Bhabnipur, Tamulpur and Gosaigaon.

Majuli constituency was not included in the list as Sonowal had not resigned till then.
