oneplus The OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro smartphones were also accused of manipulating benchmarking scores by app throttling. According to the company, the move was aimed at improving the battery life and heat management of the devices. The company said it will add an ‘optimized mode’ toggle to Oxygen OS 12 to address throttling.
What is App Throttling
In simple words, app throttling means intentionally reducing the performance of a particular app. Throttling performance of apps on smartphones is intended to boost gaming performance and battery life. In the reported cases, smartphone makers were deliberately hindering the performance of popular apps on the Google Play Store such as Google Chrome, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Netflix, Zoom and many more.

This helps in avoiding any lag that users may experience while scrolling through the user interface of the device. Since the smartphone requires less memory to run throttled apps, it has more memory to boot games and native apps quickly.
Reports suggest that Samsung’s Game Optimization Service (GOS) software, which comes pre-installed on the Samsung Galaxy S22 phone, blocks the performance of over 10,000 apps. Samsung has said that it will release a software update to give performance priority options in the Game Booster Lab under the Game Launcher app.
When it comes to OnePlus, reports claim that the company was using an application detection mechanism that was intentionally running popular apps in the slow core of the processor.
