LUCKNOW: Betting on the belief that the farmers’ movement in western UP has bridged the gap between Jats and Muslims created by the Muzaffarnagar riots of 2013. In the list of 29 released on Thursday, both the parties have fielded a total of nine Jat and nine Muslim candidates. Leading the list of Jats is SP candidate from Charthwal Pankaj Malik who is from Congress and joined SP last October.
On the other hand, RLD has fielded seven jats, including Pradeep Chaudhary from Sadabad, Preetam Singh from Gowardhan, Brijesh Chahar from Fatehpur Sikri, Rautan Singh from Khairgarh and Prasan Chaudhary from Shamli.
In the list of nine Muslim candidates, Shahid Manzoor and sitting MLAs Rafiq Ansari and Nahid Hasan are SP candidates from Kithor, Meerut Sadar and Kairana respectively.
Choudhary Nahid Hasan is the sitting SP MLA from Kairana and won the 2017 election defeating Mriganka Singh of the BJP despite the saffron brigade’s ‘Hindu exodus’ campaign before the election.
In October 2014, Nahid Hasan was elected from the constituency after sitting MLA Hukum Singh was elected to the 16th Lok Sabha.
Shahid, on the other hand, has been a three-time MLA from Manzoor Kithor and was a minister in the Akhilesh cabinet. Rafiq Ansari is a resident of Meerut. SP has retained its sitting MLA Chaudhary Aslam from Dhaulana. RLD has fielded its former block chief Haji Yunus from Bulandshahr.
He recently came into limelight after a deadly attack on his convoy. Dilnawaz Khan, former MLA from Siana assembly constituency, is in the fray on RLD ticket.
Aslam Syed from Kol and Zafar Alam from Aligarh are SP candidates.
