Sad day for Sri Lanka cricket: Sanath Jayasuriya worried after Sri Lanka’s disastrous defeat

Colombo: Sri Lanka suffered a 3-0 defeat in the three-match T20I series against England. The island nation has not won a single series so far in 2021. SL lost to England by 89 runs in the third T20I which is a big difference in T20 cricket.

Former Sri Lankan legend Sanath Jayasuriya has expressed concern over the form of the Sri Lankan team at the moment. The former explosive opener wrote in a tweet, “Very sad day for Sri Lankan cricket. Measures to save cricket.”

This is not the first time Jayasuriya has criticized the current Sri Lankan team. The former captain had openly expressed his disappointment with the Sri Lankan team after their first loss in the series against Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, Sri Lankan cricket fans started a new hashtag on Twitter, which was #UnfollowCricketers. As SL lost badly after repeated changes in the team, fans are furious with the performance of their national cricketers. Many people boycotted the Facebook pages of vice-captain Kusal Mendis and opener Dhanushka Gunathilaka.

Sri Lanka will now play a three-match ODI series against England from June 29.

Such a dismal performance by Sri Lanka, who were once world champions in 1996 and then reached consecutive finals in 2007 and 2011, is a rare sight. He recently changed the captain. Sri Lankan cricketers are not building a good reputation around their team. During South Africa’s tour of Sri Lanka, when SL lost the series 0-2, some players were caught smoking, drinking and indulging in all ‘objectionable activities’.
