World Chess Day is celebrated on 20 July. This date was chosen because it marks the founding day of the International Chess Federation. It is being celebrated since 1996 following the idea of dedicating a day to chess players and the game by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
