rift in congress in kerala due to selection of district committee chiefs

The selection of 14 district Congress Committee (DCC) presidents in Kerala has created a rift in the party, with senior leaders Oommen Chandy and Ramesh Chennithala saying on Sunday that there was no discussion with them before the selection. Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President and Member of Parliament K Sudhakaran and Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly VD Satheesan denied that there was any discussion. “The list of DCC chiefs was finalized after discussions with all the leaders including Chandy and Chennithala,” Satheesan told reporters in Kochi.

Sudhakaran told reporters in New Delhi that he was not happy with Chandy’s remarks. He said that a lot of workers were working tirelessly for the party and the decision was taken to bring DCC chiefs to the fore and put an end to factionalism. The KPCC president further said that Chandy and Chennithala had verbally informed him about the nomination for the post of DCC president, who was selected from a panel approved by two senior leaders.

On the temporary suspension of former MLA K Sivadasan Nair and former KPCC general secretary KP Anil Kumar for publicly expressing displeasure over the selection of DCC chiefs, Sudhakaran said they need not issue any show cause notice as there is no doubt about it. That’s what he said. “Clarification is sought only when there is any doubt about what someone has said,” he said.

Talking to reporters, Kumar had said that he was not given any notice before being suspended and he would complain to the AICC on the suspension. Earlier in the day, Chennithala told reporters that he accepts the list released by the AICC and party workers should agree with the list.

There may be some differences but the decision of the high command is generally accepted. He said that the matter should have been discussed at the state level. Chandy said, “Discussions were held for this and we were assured of further discussions. But nothing happened. However, its aim is to strengthen the party. All these issues could have been avoided with an effective discussion.”

Congress MP K Muraleedharan also supported the selection of 14 district chiefs and the temporary suspension of two senior party leaders. Talking to reporters here, he said that those who have been selected are capable and the decision was taken after discussing with everyone.

He cited news reports that Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi had spoken to Chandy and Chennithala and a decision agreed upon was taken by all. On the suspension of Sivadasan Nair and Anil Kumar, Muraleedharan said, “There will be differences of opinion among the members but bad remarks should not be made.” “Disagreements should not be expressed like this,” he said. “If the suspended leaders apologize, the action being taken against them will be withdrawn.

Sivadasan Nair and Anil Kumar showed lack of discipline and made public statements through the media on the reorganization of the DCC,” Sudhakaran said in a statement on Saturday. Both the leaders had criticized the state leadership over the selection of DCC chiefs.

On Saturday the AICC published a list of 14 DCCs and apparently dissatisfied leaders commented on the electronic media. .
