Review: The Hanson Brothers Shine on 7-Track ‘Against the World’

Hanson, Against the World (3CG Records)

Hanson’s guys are celebrating 30 years as a band next year, and if it makes you feel old, it’s not their fault. They’ve even put out an album to help you feel young again.

The seven-track Against the World is a rich and diverse group of songs that showcase the brothers’ range, musicianship and influence those who leave their monster Chinese pop hit mmmbop too far in the rearview mirror.

The album begins with Annaly, which has bright harmonies and guitar work reminiscent of Paul Simon. Don’t Ever Change has a rocking cheap trick sound, which is probably because Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick plays the guitar.

Rock-pop Only Love has an Eddie Vedder-like vocal that transforms from a dark, empty space into an arena. Hansons’ harmonies are superb in the Queen-Like Stronger, a sound plea for unity and the anthem leans fearlessly over an orchestra as the brothers soar above the strings.

But the highlights on the title track are Isaac, Taylor, and Zack Hanson. We are with the restless / With the rebels and with the dreamers, they sing. There are equal marks of victory and failure. If they are against the world, we are on their side.
