The Supreme Court commuted the death sentence of a convict to 20 years in prison for raping and killing a 4-year-old girl. The court delivered the verdict on Wednesday. The incident took place on 17 April 2013 in Dhansaur, Madhya Pradesh. The Jabalpur High Court had sentenced the convict to death.

Justice U.U. The bench headed by Lalit, while pronouncing the verdict, said that it is assumed that by giving maximum punishment, the evil thinking of the offender will be put to an end. It may not always work.

criminal should be given a chance
The court said that considering the seriousness and heinousness of the offence, life imprisonment instead of death sentence would have been appropriate for the offender, but we are taught through judicial principles that harsher punishment for a crime does not always work.

If the offender sees some scope for improvement, he should be given a chance. Therefore, following this principle, the court is giving 20 years imprisonment to the offender.

High Court upheld the decision of the lower court
In this case, the police had arrested Firoz and Rakesh Chaudhary. The lower court had sentenced Firoz to death in this case. At the same time, the second accused Rakesh Chaudhary was sentenced to life imprisonment. The Jabalpur High Court had upheld this decision. After this, Firoz, through his mother, filed a petition challenging the death sentence in the Supreme Court.

Every saint has a past and every sinner has a future
The Supreme Court ruled that the great writer Oscar Wilde had said that the only difference between a saint and a sinner in this world is that every saint has a past and every sinner has a future. No criminal can escape from the consequences of his crime. This thing should remain in the mind of every criminal.
