‘Ready to appear before UP Police, but…’: Twitter India MD puts condition before Karnataka HC

Bangalore: Twitter India MD Manish Maheshwari told the Karnataka High Court on Tuesday that he is ready to appear before the Uttar Pradesh Police for questioning over a tweet about an attack by a Muslim man in Ghaziabad, provided they give a written guarantee. Agree that they will not be arrested.

He had approached the court last month after he was summoned by the Ghaziabad police in an investigation related to the assault on an elderly Muslim man.

The Uttar Pradesh Police informed the court that it only wanted to interrogate Maheshwari and did not intend to arrest her.

“What is the crux of the allegations? A molestation video uploaded on Twitter. Twitter India is not associated with the incident. What is the allegation against it? It should be abstract to say that Twitter India is capable of removing it,” ANI told the judge asking the lawyer of Uttar Pradesh Police.

“You are investigating the company. To investigate, you need to identify the person, but if the entity is not able to take such action then where is the matter? This plea is nothing unless you Can’t show that he could have stopped it,” the high court said.

Hearing on the petition has been adjourned for Wednesday.

The Ghaziabad police had earlier issued notice to Maheshwari and asked her to report at her Loni Border police station on June 24 to record her statement in the case.

The head of Twitter India had then moved the High Court seeking relief.

The court then restrained the Ghaziabad police from initiating any coercive action against him.

The court had also said that the police can interrogate Maheshwari through virtual mode.

Abdul Shamad Saifi, an elderly Muslim man, in a video clip that surfaced on social media on June 14, alleged that he was thrashed by some youths and asked to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’.

In this regard, the Ghaziabad Police had registered an FIR on June 15.
