Ranchi: Protest against Nupur Sharma’s Prophet’s statement turned violent, curfew imposed

Several vehicles were damaged in Ranchi in protest against suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma for her remarks on Prophet Mohammad turning violent.

Ranchi Curfew, Violence News: The protest against the controversial statement of suspended Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nupur Sharma in Jharkhand’s capital Ranchi turned violent on Friday. Several people are reported to have been injured in the violence after Friday prayers.

Incidents of stone pelting and vehicles torching were reported in the Main Road area, following which police teams had to lathi-charge and use tear gas to control the violent mob.

A top police officer said the situation was tense but under control. Heavy security deployment has been made to control the situation and avoid any untoward incident.

“The situation is a bit tense but under control. We are making all efforts from our side. Heavy security deployment has been made. Senior officials are also present at the spot. We are making all efforts to see that the crowd disperses from here. – Be scattered.” Ranchi DIG Anish Gupta told news agency ANI.

Haji Mohammad Hasim, president of New Daily Market Traders Welfare Association, told PTI, “Over 1,100 shops were closed in the market since morning in protest against the remarks of Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal. We demand their immediate arrest.”

Prophet’s remarks snowball – protests in many cities

Protests broke out in several cities across IndiaAlso in Delhi over Nupur Sharma and her former party colleague Naveen Jindal’s alleged remarks on Prophet Mohammad.

A massive protest took place outside Delhi Jama Masjid after Friday prayers demanding the arrest of suspended BJP leaders. However, the Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid denied any protest called by any Muslim organisation. The Shahi Imam said he did not know who had called the protest.

Uttar Pradesh

In Uttar Pradesh, protests were witnessed in Prayagraj, Lucknow, Moradabad and Saharanpur, Kanpur and other cities. This comes after clashes broke out in Kanpur last week over the remarks on the Prophet on a TV debate a few days ago.

Thereafter, a high alert was sounded across the state and heavy police force was deployed to ensure that violence does not happen again.
