Gambhir heaped praise on Avesh and said that he has a big heart to take up the responsibility of bowling the crucial overs.

“This bowler has a lot of talent, he has the pace, a big heart to bowl difficult overs. But I would like to see him get better in every match. He is a young bowler, IPL should not be his target only T20 World The cup is coming forward,” he said.

Young Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh were selected in the playing XI for the opening match of the series. The young pacer has played only three matches for India so far and is in the hunt for a place in the T20 World Cup squad later this year.

Gambhir said the 25-year-old has a hunger to learn new things and has the potential to represent India in all three formats if he continues to work hard.

“He has the attitude that a fast bowler should have and most importantly, he is still young and wants to learn. If he keeps working hard, he can become a great bowler not only in T20 but in all three formats.

Gambhir further emphasized on why an extra pace helped the bowler execute his plans at all stages of the game, from the powerplay to the slog overs.

“That ability comes with pace. If you have the pace, you feel confident in all three phases. We have seen a lot of bowlers who don’t have the pace that Avesh Khan, Prashant Krishna and Jasprit Bumrah have , then you have to give them extra protection.

Gambhir worked very closely with Avesh at LSG, where he faced some competition within the team as Mohsin Khan was the other fast bowler who impressed many during his first season of the IPL.

“It is a good thing that if one player pushes the other, you can get better than the other player, which is what you want. Your squad is good when every player gets pushed, another player comes and pushes you and Mohsin Khan did exceptionally well,” he said.
