Official sources said Defense Minister Rajnath Singh will be on a two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir from Thursday during which he will review the overall security situation in the Union Territory. He informed that the Defense Minister will visit various forward areas and review the preparedness of the Indian Armed Forces.
He said senior Indian Army commanders would brief Singh about the overall security situation in the interior areas and along the Line of Control (LoC). Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a spate of killings of innocent civilians over the past few weeks, raising fears of an intensifying cycle of violence in the region.
Security forces have intensified their anti-terrorist operation in view of the killings. Sources said the Defense Minister will be apprised of the situation along the LoC and the International Border (IB).
In a significant move aimed at de-escalating tensions, Indian and Pakistani armies announced on February 25 last year that they would cease firing across the Line of Control, committing themselves to the 2003 ceasefire agreement.
