The order was passed on a petition filed by Prem Chandra Mishra and others.

It was submitted on behalf of the petitioners that the Central Government had already decided that the age of superannuation of teaching staff of higher and technical educational institutions funded by the Center should be raised to 65 years.

Subsequently, the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2010 directed the universities to implement the Centre’s decision.

The petitioners said that UGC rules apply to Lucknow University as well, but it is not implementing the decision.
