Rain may dampen festive spirit during Durga Puja in South Bengal, says IMD

The India Meteorological Department said on Wednesday that light to moderate rains may spoil the mood in southern parts of West Bengal during Durga Puja. Regional Meteorological Department director Sanjib Bandopadhyay said that a low pressure area is likely to form in the Andaman Sea around October 10. Although the pre-puja weather will be good till October 9-12, there is a possibility of rain till October 13-15. . The four-day festival will be celebrated from October 12-15, with ‘Maha Ashtami’ on October 13. “Coastal districts of South 24 Parganas and Purba Medinipur, besides other districts of South Bengal like Paschim Medinipur, Howrah, Hooghly and Kolkata may receive light to moderate rains during this period,” he said.

However, the weather is likely to remain clear in the districts of North Bengal during Durga Puja days. Several districts of South Bengal, including Howrah, Hooghly and Paschim Medinipur, are still affected by the floods and many low-lying areas are submerged.

According to a defense official, at least five columns of the Army, each consisting of 50 personnel, are assisting the civil administration in flood relief operations in Howrah’s Udaynarayanpur block and Arambagh, Pursura and Khankul in Hooghly district.
