An orange alert has been issued in Delhi for today, days after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted heavy rain and strong winds in the national capital, days after the city witnessed a record spell of 1,000 mm for the first time. “Rain has been reported in Noida, Faridabad and east and central parts of Delhi. Tomorrow we are expecting some change in the intensity of rain around Delhi-NCR region,” a Skymet official told NDTV.
The capital has received 1,146.4 mm of annual rainfall so far this monsoon season, the highest in 46 years. The city recorded 117.9 mm of rain on Saturday, leading to widespread waterlogging at the Delhi airport, disrupting traffic on major roads and vehicular traffic underpasses. At least five flights – four domestic flights to Delhi and one international flight – were diverted to neighboring cities due to heavy rains.
The Safdarjung Observatory, which is considered the official marker for the city, estimated 1,150 mm of rainfall during the monsoon season in 1975.
Generally, Delhi receives 653.6 mm of rain during the monsoon season. Between June 1, when the monsoon begins, and September 14, the city normally receives 607.7 mm of rainfall. Monsoon this month has recorded 390 mm of rain in Delhi till Tuesday, the highest in 77 years in September.
