Hubballi: The political affairs committee of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), which All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Sonia Gandhi approved, is slated to hold its first meeting in Hubballi on Tuesday. Former AICC president Rahul Gandhi and Congress general secretary KC Venugopal will be among those in attendance.
KPCC president DK Shivakumar, interacting with representatives of the press on Sunday in Hubballi, said that the party leaders would deliberate and chalk out the strategies for the 2023 assembly elections. On Rahul’s itinerary while in Karnataka, Shivakumar said, “He will arrive at Hubballi Airport in the evening on Tuesday. We have suggested that he visit Murugha Math in Chitradurga in the morning on Wednesday, following which he will participate in former chief minister Siddaramaiah’s birthday celebrations. He will return to Hubballi, from where he will leave for Delhi.”
The KPCC chief said that he was not in a position to disclose much about Rahul’s proposed visit to the Karntaka Khadi Gramodyoga Samyuktha Sangha (KKGSS) in Bengeri, which has been in the news following the Centre’s decision to permit polyester flags in celebrations. Shivakumar said that the party would launch a campaign from August 5 to 10 to protest levying of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on essential commodities.
The former minister said that none of the Congress leaders had called on the bereaved kin of the three individuals recently killed in Dakshina Kannada district. “In accordance with the instructions from police, we have decided not to visit the victims’ homes. We will certainly call on them once peace is established. That the government has announced compensation for only one of the three victims is to be condemned,” said Shivakumar, demanding a probe into all the three murders.
Shivakumar attributed the lawless situation in the state to the chief minister’s failure to crack down on moral policing. “The government has even allowed police to don saffron,” he said.
On Dharwad MP and Union minister Pralhad Joshi’s remarks defending the Centre’s decision on polyester flags, which he said were less expensive, Shivakumar said, “The Centre must distribute khadi flags free of cost to the public. This will save the khadi industry.”
MLC Saleem Ahmed, MLA Prasad Abbayya were among those who were present at the event.
