The Kerala State Committee of the Students Federation of India (SFI) on Sunday decided to dissolve its Wayanad district committee over the alleged vandalism of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s office by some activists. In a Facebook post, the state committee said that at a meeting held during the day in Thrissur, it was decided to dissolve the Wayanad district committee and form a seven-member ad-hoc committee as an interim measure.
The Facebook post further stated that the action was taken because on June 24, the Wayanad district committee had organized a march to the Congress MP’s office without the knowledge of the state committee and the protest had become so aggressive that it was not before the public. Shame on the whole organization. , The post said that Aldos Mathai, currently the district joint secretary of the SFI, will be the convener of the seven-member ad-hoc committee.
The vandalism of Gandhi’s office led the Congress to organize a massive rally at Kalpetta in Wayanad district and a Youth Congress protest in Kottayam allegedly turned violent. Hours after SFI activists were allegedly involved in vandalism on June 24, the Left government had ordered a high-level inquiry from an ADGP rank officer and suspended Kalpetta’s deputy superintendent of police.
The CPI(M) and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also condemned the vandalism. However, due to the issue, the June 27 assembly session was disrupted by the Congress-led UDF opposition as some of its members wearing black shirts raised placards, banners and raised slogans demanding action in the matter. .
The next day, the adjournment motion of the opposition regarding sabotage was discussed in detail in the House and then rejected by the Assembly. SFI workers had taken out a protest march to Gandhi’s office and allegedly ransacked his office, claiming inaction on his part with regard to the issue of buffer zones around forests.
A recent Supreme Court order mandating the maintenance of one kilometer eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) around national parks and wildlife sanctuaries has led to widespread protests in various parts of Kerala. The high-border areas of Kerala, especially in Idukki, Wayanad, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta districts, had witnessed strikes by various political and farmer groups against the apex court’s order on June 3.
