Rahul Gandhi slams PM Modi over report on WHO’s estimate of Kovid deaths

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday claimed in a recent report on Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the Indian government is stalling efforts by the World Health Organization (WHO) to publish its estimate on excess COVID mortality.

Gandhi wrote on his Twitter handle, “Modi ji does not speak the truth, he does not allow (others) to speak.”

“They still lie that no one died of lack of oxygen! I had said earlier also – 40 lakh Indians died due to the negligence of the government in Kovid, not 5 lakh. Please, Modi ji – give a compensation of ₹4 lakh to every victim’s family,” wrote the Lok Sabha member from Wayanad in Hindi.

Notably, India on Saturday questioned the methodology of the World Health Organization to estimate the number of COVID deaths in the country.

India said as per media reports, such mathematical calculations cannot be applied to estimate the death rate for such a vast nation of geographic size and population.

“India’s basic objection is not with the outcome (whatever that may be), but the methodology adopted for it,” the Union health ministry said in the statement, adding that the model gives two different sets of additional mortality rates. Estimates when using data from Tier I countries and unverified data from 18 Indian states. Such wide variation in estimates raises concerns about the validity and accuracy of such modeling exercises. ,

The model applied to estimate deaths assumes an inverse relationship between monthly temperature and monthly average mortality.

“WHO has not yet shared confidence intervals for current statistical models in different countries,” the statement said. and if the result of such exercise may be shared with all Member States.”
