Quebec Closing Bars, Gyms and Cinemas Case Counts Soar

TORONTO: Quebec announced on Monday that it was closing bars, cinemas, gyms and spas in the Canadian province due to a record number of coronavirus cases. Sports events will be closed for spectators.

Quebec Health Minister Christian Daub also said that restaurants should be closed by 10 pm.

The new measures come on top of last week’s decision to limit restaurants and bars to 50% capacity.

Quebec reported 4,571 COVID-19 cases on Monday, a new record since the start of the pandemic.

Starting Tuesday, elementary schools and high schools will be closed to in-person learning until January 10, although the facilities will be used to deliver vaccinations or rapid tests to students.

Spectators would not be allowed to attend professional or amateur sporting events, although the Montreal Canadiens of the NHL had played a recent game before the empty stands.

Remote work, which was earlier recommended by the authorities, will now be mandatory wherever possible.
