Florida Democratic Rep. Murphy will not seek re-election

Orlando, Fla.: US Representative Stephanie Murphy announced on Monday that she would not run for re-election next year.

A Florida Democrat, leader of the centrist Blue Dog coalition and a member of the House committee investigating the January 6 Capitol uprising, said she was retiring from Congress to spend more time with her family.

“Public service is not without personal sacrifices, and as a mother of two young children, I have had a tough time away from them. for them. For me. And to our family,” she said in a video statement.

Murphy, 43, was first elected in 2016, becoming the first Vietnamese American woman and the second Vietnamese American in Congress, after defeating 12-term Republican John Micah in a Central Florida district that also includes part of Orlando.

Murphy was widely considered to be a challenger to U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, but said she would not seek the position after U.S. Representative Val Demings, another Florida Democrat, took her position earlier this year. started bidding.

Prior to taking office, Murphy was the National Security Advisor at the Pentagon. She was born in Vietnam and came to the United States as an infant when her family fled the country.

In his statement, Murphy did not rule out another role in public service in the future.
