Punjab Congress chief Navjot Sidhu says more youth will be given tickets in 2022 assembly elections

Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu on Sunday said that more tickets will be given to the youth during the upcoming state assembly elections than the previous one. Sidhu also targeted the previous SAD-BJP government, accusing it of patronizing the mafia in Punjab.

Without naming anyone, the cricketer-turned-politician also hit out at AAP, claiming that they were behind him to join his party. The newly appointed President of Punjab Pradesh Congress was addressing the State Youth Congress workers at Congress Bhawan here. A march was also taken out by Youth Congress workers on the occasion of Independence Day.

Addressing the gathering, Sidhu promised the youth that he would respect the merit and added that he wanted the youth to get opportunities. He insisted that no talent is anything without opportunity.

He further said that he has put up a bed at the Punjab Congress Bhawan to address the workers’ issues, a promise he made during his foundation ceremony last month. He said that he has come to change the system which does not accept workers and restricts power to a few people.

He announced that youth will get one and a half times more tickets than before. The former Amritsar MLA also sought answers to his political opponents, who had accused him of being behind office and power.

Stating that he has given up the Rajya Sabha seat and other posts and asked whether any of those criticizing him have ever given up the post of sarpanch (village head). He further rebuked his detractors who questioned him why he did not become Minister of Power, a portfolio that was given to him in 2019 after he was removed from the Department of Local Government.

Attacking the previous Akali government, Sidhu said the state earns only Rs 40 crore per year from the mining sector, while Telangana earned Rs 47 crore a week from the same sector. He further said that if he ever gets the power of the people, he will eliminate the word mafia from the map of Punjab.

He further said that Tamil Nadu is earning Rs 36,000 crore from liquor business despite 50 per cent consumption as compared to Punjab. But we are earning only Rs 3,000 to 4,000 crore for the last 20 years.

Apparently pointing to AAP, Sidhu said that they have been accusing him of doing politics for the chair. You were holding a chair in Sidhu’s lap. And you came to my house and asked me, Sidhu sahib, what can we do for you? Sidhu claimed without naming the Aam Aadmi Party.

Taking a dig at you, he said that he would write a letter to her. He said that they should send the letter to the correct address. On Friday, AAP leader Raghav Chadha had said that he had written to Sidhu to remind him about the 2017 election promises and to fulfill them.
