The order will be applicable for schools in all the four regions of the Union Territory of Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam in view of the prevalence of viral subtypes of influenza, especially among children.

Puducherry: The Puducherry government on Wednesday declared holiday for all schools up to class 8 from March 16 to March 26 in view of the spread of H3N2 influenza virus in the union territory.

The order will be applicable for schools in all the four regions of the Union Territory of Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam in view of the prevalence of viral subtypes of influenza, especially among children.

Speaking during the Zero Hour in the House, Home and Education Minister A Nammasivayam said that in view of the spread of influenza, especially among children, the government has decided to declare a holiday for all schools, including privately managed institutions and government-aided schools, from primary to class 8.

The union territory’s health department had on March 11 said that Puducherry had reported 79 cases of the virus belonging to the viral H3N2 subtype till March 4.

Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister C Jekoumer said the territorial administration has introduced a Government Order (GO) providing reservation for Most Backward Class (MBC) candidates in recruitment to Group B non-gazetted posts in government departments. He informed the House that after the decision was taken by the UT cabinet, a mandate has been issued in this regard.

Earlier, all members of the opposition DMK and Congress walked out of the House to protest against the introduction of prepaid meters for billing electricity consumption in the Union Territory. DMK’s opposition leader R Siva, who led the members’ walkout, said installation of such electricity meters was “anti-people” and created chaos among electricity consumers. The DMK leader insisted that the prepaid metering system be done away with.

The protesting legislators did not agree with the contention of Minister A Namassivam, who also holds the power portfolio, that prepaid electricity consumption meters were introduced to prevent power theft and pilferage.
