GUWAHATI: Protests over police firing in Assam’s Nagaon district, following which a former All Assam Students’ Union (Aasu) worker sustained bullet injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, continued in the district for the second day on Monday. The protesters demanded justice for the “innocent” youth and suspension of the district superintendent of police Anand Mishra.
Based on the complaint of accused police officer Pradip Bania, an FIR was lodged against victim Kirtikamal Bora. Another FIR was lodged, based on the complaint of Bora’s father Nilkamal Bora, against the police personnel at the Nagaon Sadar police station.
The incident took place at Kachalukhua area in Nagaon on Saturday night when Kirti Kamal Bora, who was returning home from a pharmacy, intervened after he saw a few police personnel in plain-clothes beating up two persons and questioning them. Bora claimed that he could not recognize them as policemen. Bora alleged that he was thrashed by the police personnel, who were allegedly in an inebriated condition, and shot him on his knee. He suffered a bone fracture on his right thigh.
Assam Jatiya Parishad president and former Aasu general secretary Lurin Jyoti Gogoi, who joined the protest in Nagaon, said: “The incident, where an innocent youth sustained bullet injury in police firing, indicates a dangerous future. We condemn such acts and demand a judicial inquiry into the case. The culture of extra judicial killing must stop.” He added that the accused must get punished and the victim must get justice.
Meanwhile, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday reiterated that the state government would take strict action against police personnel if found guilty. “However, it cannot be said who is guilty at this moment. Investigation is on. Our fight is against organized crimes. We cannot allow police to open fire on innocent people,” he added.
Koustav Kamal Bora, the victim’s elder brother, claimed that he was also threatened by police when he had gone to the incident spot on Saturday after his brother got shot at. “Police personnel present on the spot had asked me to go away, or else they would shoot me too. I faced such threats for just asking them what had actually happened,” Kosutav added.
Kosutav also joined the protest on Monday and said the agitation will continue till his brother gets justice and the accused is punished.
Moreover, he claimed that Kirtikamal was preparing for the recruitment exam for the post of sub-inspector in Assam police. “Now, the Assam police have shot at him and shattered his dream to serve in the state police,” he added.
The Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti, the students’ wing of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti, also protested here in Guwahati demanding justice for the victim. The protesters also demanded a compensation of Rs 20 lakh and employment for the victim.
